Welcome to Sweetgum Flower Farm! We are so excited to have a webpage up and running and looking forward to lots of flowers in the Spring of 2021, which will be our first year of farming flowers.  We have been pumpkin farmers for the last 15 years, but I have just been a flower gardener until the idea hit me last winter to grow cut flowers to sell.  I ordered seeds and was waiting for it to be dry enough to work up my soil when Covid hit the world. Since the world was shutting down, I put most of the seeds in the refrigerator and decided just to grow a small test plot of flowers to start learning more about the process.  Looking back, I definitely made the right decision because I have learned so much over the last 8 months.  I bought several books including ‘Cool Flowers’ by Lisa Mason Zeigler with The Garden Workshop and ‘Cut Flower Garden’ and ‘A Year in Flowers’ by Erin Benzakein with Floret Flowers. Then I started studying more about the growing process, the difference in cool annuals and warm annuals, the benefits to the community and the environment of buying local, and ways to market local flowers.  I also signed up and graduated from The Garden Workshop Online Flower School. So now I feel like I know a little about the process, but it will be going through the process that is the real teacher.

With my small flower garden this last summer, I had enough flowers to have a bouquet in my home all summer long and gave many away! I loved giving them away and seeing the joy they brought, and the idea of Faith Flowers began.  I want to make enough money growing flowers to sustain the business and then I want to give tons of Faith Flowers away to people that need them!

This last summer we got all our rows worked up, installed a watering system, and purchased seed and supplies.  I started growing cool flower seedlings in my garage under grow lights, over 2000 of them…yikes.  This fall, I managed to plant them all with some help from family and friends and get them under row covers, and am now waiting and hoping they do well.  Cool flowers prefer colder temperatures and when we plant them in the fall and winter months, they allow us to have flowers in the spring and summer that normally don’t do well here in Arkansas in the summer because of the heat…such as snapdragons, larkspur, sweet William, Bupleurum, and Bells of Ireland. I’m nervous and excited all at the same time about the spring.  I can’t wait to see blooms!  Stay tuned…I’ll be sharing with y’all as I go!
